Castle of Mey
Not too far from Wick is The Castle of Mey was owned by Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother between 1952 to 1996, she then gifted it to the Trust with an endowment for its upkeep. In the parish of Canisbay. It stands just above the shoreline overlooking the Orkney Islands and the Pentland Firth.
It was built between 1566 and 1572. The grounds and walled garden are protected by the Great Wall of Mey, the weather is often stormy so the 12ft wall is necessary.
The Gardens are wonderful, 2 acres are protected from the weather, with a full kitchen garden. Also grown amongst the many varieties is the Queen Mothers favourite rose, the Albertine. Since the Queen Mothers death, Prince Charles has taken an active role in the gardens.
The Estate is open to the public from May to September.
